Midview’s Crum a record machine

- By Jon Behm

Midview’s Dustin Crum is good. Really good.

He has proven that week in and week out, and he added to his legacy in Week 5, topping Cody Callaway’s career passing yards record in a win over Berea-Midpark.

However, his legacy is something Crum is not worried about. Rather, he simply wanted to make sure the Middies got back to their winning ways.

“I guess it feels nice (to have the record), definitely feels a lot nicer, though, bouncing back on our home field after a tough loss last week. First time we lost on this field in quite a long time, so definitely that’s the bigger accomplishment,” Crum said after the game.

“It’s definitely been a while since we lost and we definitely wanted to play a little angry and with a chip on our shoulder and we wanted to prove something and when it comes down to it ,you just have to come out and execute and do your job every night and we did a pretty good job of that tonight.”

However, team accomplishments not withstanding, Crum has made a career of rewriting the record books

Crum owns nearly all of the Midview and Lorain County passing records. But there are some records out there — both at Midview and in the county — the Kent State commit can get. Here’s a look at the records within the senior’s reach:

• Midview’s passing yards in a game record. The record is held by Callaway at 450. It may seem like this is a record that Crum should already have gotten, as big numbers are well within his wheelhouse. However, Crum holds spot Nos. 2-5 on the list, with his 425-yard performance in Week 2 against North Olmsted in 2015 ranking at No. 2 on the list.

• Midview’s career rushing yards record. Crum entered 2016 at No. 4 on the list with 2,215 yards. In the win over Berea-Midpark, he climbed to No. 3 on the list, passing Josiah Holt’s 2,334 yards from 2007-2009. Crum, sitting at 2,440 yards, needs only 236 yards to pass Gary Larkin’s record of 2,675 yards.

• Midview’s career points scored record. This one isn’t a record that Crum can get — it’s probably going to be quite a while before someone touches Logan Bolin’s mark of 386. However, heading into Week 6, Crum has 178 career points, putting him 32 points out of fourth-place on the Middies list. He’s 50 points out of third place and 54 points behind Ricky Renuart’s No. 2 standing. Depending on how many games deep the Middies go into the playoffs, it is not inconceivable that Crum could get as high as No. 2.

• Lorain County’s passing yards in a career. Elyria Catholic’s Danny Reaser holds the record at 7, 297 yards. Crum has 7,153 yards, meaning he needs only 144 yards to break the record. The interesting part? Crum could possibly break the record as the Middies face Westlake this week. WOBL-AM 1320 will be broadcasting the match. Reaser will be part of the crew working the game.

• Ohio’s passing yards in a career. Crum is No. 35 on the all-time list. If Crum duplicates what he did in the first half of the season over the remaining five regular season games, he will finish the regular season at 8,336 yards, putting him at No. 22 all-time.

• Ohio’s passing touchdowns in a career. Crum entered the season with 71 passing touchdowns, good enough for No. 36 on the state list. He now has 84 touchdown throws, boosting him to a tie for No. 20 with Austin Bruns of Coldwater. Doubling his start to the season would place Crum in sole possestion of the No. 13 spot with 97 touchdowns. He would need 110 career touchdowns to finish in the top10.
