Caregiver faces charges over child’s broken arm
An injured toddler with a broken arm sparked an investigation by the North Ridgeville Police Department.
An injured toddler with a broken arm sparked an investigation by the North Ridgeville Police Department and resulted in a woman being arrested, according to police Capt. Marti Garrow.
James Edith Collins, 33, of Wallace Boulevard in North Ridgeville, was charged with domestic violence and endangering children, which are both first-degree misdemeanors. Lorain County Jail records indicate Collins was booked Sept. 25.
Garrow said the investigation began Sept. 24 after the Cleveland Clinic’s Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, 33100 Cleveland Clinic Blvd. in Avon, contacted the Police Department about an injured 3-year-old girl. The girl suffered a broken arm and bruises to her body.
From Avon, the girl was taken to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland for further treatment.
Garrow said police are still investigating exactly how the girl’s arm was broken, but Collins, who was identified as a caregiver, said it was an accident. It is believed the girl’s arm was broken on Sept. 24.
Collins is being held on a $200,000 bond, Garrow said.
Elyria Municipal Court records indicate Collins pleaded not guilty to both charges at her arraignment hearing Sept. 26. She is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 5.
