Sports shorts Indians game postponed

-

The Sept. 29 game between the Tigers and Indians has been postponed because of bad weather, a move that could force the teams to squeeze in a makeup game next week if it needs to be played because of postseason implications.

The Tigers and Indians played a rain-shortened game Sept. 28, which Detroit won 6-3 in five innings. The scheduled series finale Sep. 29 never began. It was called after a delay of 4 hours, 13 minutes.

Cleveland has clinched the AL Central. The Tigers are one game behind Baltimore for the American League’s second wild card.

Detroit begins a threegame series at Atlanta on Sept. 30, and Cleveland starts a three-game set at Kansas City. The Tigers and Indians would need to play a makeup game Oct. 3 if it could affect who makes the postseason or how teams are seeded.

Breanna Stewart is the WNBA rookie of the year.

The league announced Thursday that Stewart received 38 of the 39 votes from a national media panel. San Antonio’s Moriah Jefferson got the other vote.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft out of Connecticut, Stewart averaged 18.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks, becoming the sixth player in league history to reach those averages in the same season.

It’s the second consecutive season a Storm player won the award, marking the first time in the league’s 20-year history that the same team has back-to-back winners. Jewell Loyd was the rookie of the year in 2015.

Dez Bryant missed medical appointments and team meetings over two days away from the Dallas Cowboys this week. Coach Jason Garrett says the star receiver was trying to avoid bad news about his injured right knee.

Garrett said Bryant missed an MRI on Monday and a team meeting on Tuesday before finally getting the exam Wednesday. The MRI revealed a hairline fracture in a bone in his right knee, which he injured in last Sunday’s win over Chicago.

It’s possible Bryant won’t miss Sunday’s game at San Francisco because the Cowboys have had similar scenarios with injury in the past. But he was expected to miss practice for the second straight day Thursday.

Garrett said Bryant’s response “was not the right one.”
