CLEARVIEW AT OBERLIN

-

What: Patriot Athletic Conference game When: 7p.m., Sept. 30 Where: Oberlin Stadium, 281 N. Pleasant St., Oberlin Records: Clearview 1-4, Oberlin 2-3 Last time: Clearview For the record: This game is a bit of a turning point of the season for both teams. As they open Stripes Division play, both teams appear to be the toughest contenders to Columbia to take the crown. This game will do a lot in determining which team will be the true contender. Expect this game to feature plenty of running as Clearview’s Drew Engle and Oberlin’s Devan Yarber are emerging as premier backs in the Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division. The interesting wrinkle will be the quarterback position. With David Payne III for Oberlin, the Clippers know they are facing an efficient passer who will keep throws short, but can open it up when needed. He is also not afraid to run the ball. Clearview presents more of a mystery as junior Anthony Terry has stepped into the quarterback role for the Clippers. His sample size is small enough that he could take the Phoenix by surprise, revealing new wrinkles in his skill set. 2015— 39-7, For the record: This is a huge game for Elyria Catholic if it hopes to stay in the Great Lakes Conference race. Realistically, the conference will come down to four teams: Bay, Rocky River, Holy Name and Elyria Catholic. The Green Wave is the only team on that list without a conference loss. Dropping to 0-2in the conference could effectively eliminate the Panthers from the conference picture. The good news? This is a winnable game for Elyria Catholic. Holy Name has shown issues at times defending the run this season. That should be enough to make Morning Journal area rushing touchdowns leader Daryl Davis ready to go. But, that is if they can get through the Green Wave line. Holy Name’s line has been playing well. It is the tackles from the linebackers that have been at times problematic for the run defense. Expect a heavy dose of Davis in this one.

Records: River 4-1 Last time: Keystone For the record: On the other side of the Patriot Athletic Conference, we have Keystone and Black River, two of the four teams that should be fighting for the Stars Division title. And this will be game that is battled out on the ground. Black River boasts a strong ground game with Corey Bartolic and Travis Sexton — a pair of runners who complement each other well. Keystone, though, is no slouch

Keystone 4-1, Black 2015— 20-0, in the rushing department as Bobby Weber and Kyler Staller have kept defenses off-balance to the tune of 774yards and 10 touchdowns so far this season. Rather, this game should come down to defense, where the Wildcats have the clear-cut advantage. Keystone has allowed 16.4points per game this year — three times keeping their opponents to seven points or less. As for Black River? The Pirates score 25.2points per game and have only once kept a team below the 20-point threshold.

Records: 3-2 Last time: Midview

Midview 4-1, Westlake 2015— 61-20,

These two teams should try to get air mileage points for how many yards they will be putting up in this game. Two of The Morning Journal area’s top three slingers face off in this one as Midview’s Dustin Crum and Westlake’s Trey Bialowas will put on an aerial show that fans are sure to not want to miss. With defenses that have been solid, but at times porous, this game could simply come down to which team has the ball as the clock is winding down. Midview is coming off of a drubbing of Berea-Midpark, while Westlake lost in Week 5 to Avon. Both teams are going to want to make a statement that they have not given up on a SWC title. This is the game to do it.

Records: Michigan SD 1-3, Open Door 0-4 Last time: Have not played For the record: This should be the game where Open Door finally gets to show its offensive prowess. After showdowns as the Patriots adjusted to eight-man football, they are finally ready to show the full capabilities of their team, and what better time to do that than under the lights at home in a homecoming night matchup.

1-4 Last time: Huron For the record: In a grinder of a Sandusky Bay Conference schedule, a game against a struggling Huron team could be exactly what the Sailors need to get their feet back under them. After a 2-0start, Vermilion has been in a free-fall where offense has been had to come by, averaging 10points per game in the losses as opposed to 31.5in their wins. The good news is that Huron’s defense has not been shy about letting teams score, averaging 30.8 points per game against so far this season. Expect quarterback Seth Hurd and running back Caine Zannoni to have a breakout game in this one. 2011— 44-0,
