Women rescued from overturned vehicle
An overturned vehicle stalled traffic on state Route 301 in LaGrange Township on Sept. 29 and resulted in two women being taken to the hospital, according to Sgt. Pablo Cruz with the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Elyria Post.
Shortly before 10 a.m., a gray Ford Focus was headed north on Route 301 in a 55 mph zone, approaching the intersection of Webster Road. The driver, a 61-yearold Mansfield woman, failed to negotiate the curve and went off the right side of the road just south of the intersection.
Cruz said as the driver attempted to straighten out, she struck a culvert and vaulted over the intersection with Webster Road.
The vehicle landed on its roof and came to a final rest after colliding with a tree on the right side of the road, Cruz said. He suspects speed and lack of attention to be factors in the crash. “At 55 mph, if you’re paying attention, you can make that curve all day,” Cruz said, noting the incident was not weather related.
Both women were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Cruz said both passengers had to be extricated from the vehicle by Wellington and LaGrange firefighters with the help of the Jaws of Life.
The driver and the female passenger were taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for treatment. Cruz said both suffered incapacitating injuries.
“At the scene, she (the driver) didn’t remember what happened,” he said.
Cruz said the driver has yet to be cited, but will likely face a failure to control citation.
Traffic on Route 301 was halted for about 35 minutes while first responders worked to free the two female passengers and document the scene.
