An assault involving a machete has landed a man behind bars, according to a Lorain police report

David Lee Brown, 38, was charged with felonious assault, domestic violence and burglary after an incident in Lorain on Sept. 29. Lorain Municipal Court records indicate Brown’s address is unknown.

Officers responded to the 2300 block of Westview Court about 11:55 p.m. after receiving calls about a domestic violence issue.

A 30-year-old female victim explained that she was home with her children when Brown broke in as she slept on the couch, according to a Lorain police report.

The victim said she awoke to someone touching her and opened her eyes to see Brown sitting in her face, the report said.

Brown began accusing the victim of calling the sheriff’s office to get him arrested and using profanity directed toward her, and prevented her from going back to sleep, according to the report.

At one point, the victim attempted to get away, and Brown hit her with his elbow in her upper lip area, the report said. Brown followed the victim upstairs as she attempted to check on her children.

Brown then brandished a machete, swinging it at the victim’s head, the report said.

The report indicated Brown swung the machete at the victim twice, but missed both times, instead striking the ceiling and a chair. The victim was able to make it downstairs and had her son, whose age was not included in the report, run to a neighbor’s house to call the police.

Brown and the victim have an open domestic violence case, according to the report, but the temporary protection order against Brown had not yet been served.

Brown also has three domestic violence charges from Cleveland stemming from an Aug. 4 incident, according to the report.

Brown fled the scene prior to police arriving, and several units were dispatched to search the area. During this time, officers located an open shed behind the abandoned Animal House, 2450 Leavitt Road.

While checking the shed about 11:55 p.m. Sept. 29, officers located a machete, a bicycle with wet tires and a recent bicycle track that led from the area of the victim’s home. The report said the shed also smelled like freshly burnt marijuana. Brown was not located at this time.

Closer inspection of the machete revealed fresh white marks on the blade that officers suspect to be from drywall.

Officers checked the shed again at 2:15 a.m. Sept. 30, and noticed someone inside with a flashlight. While police were waiting for additional units, Brown exited the shed and was taken into custody without incident.

The report said Brown had an outstanding warrant for domestic violence out of Lorain and an additional warrant through Lorain County 911 for larceny. Brown was booked into the Lorain City Jail.

Lorain Municipal Court records show Brown appeared for his arraignment hearing Sept. 30 and pleaded not guilty to all charges. His bond was set at $100,000.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 11 before Municipal Judge Thomas Elwell.
