Ex-coach accused of sexually assaulting Ohio student, 14

-

A former Euclid middle school girls basketball coach has been indicted on charges alleging he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl.

WEWS-TV reports 22-year-old Kevon Smith was indicted Wednesday on 11 counts, including unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, sexual battery and disseminating matter harmful to juveniles.

The Associated Press Oct. 21 left a message seeking comment for his attorney.

Smith was a coach and an educational assistant for Euclid City Schools. Police say he assaulted the girl between December 2015 and September 2016. He was arrested Sept. 30.

The district says Smith hasn’t been employed during the 2016-17 school year and is now barred from entering any school grounds or attending any school events.

In a statement, the district said it recently learned of the arrest and indictment and are “shocked by the allegations.”

“It goes without saying that the District will be fully cooperating with the authorities in this matter,” the district said in its statement. “We have also taken steps to ensure our students and their families have all the support they may need during this very difficult time.”

The district said it cannot comment further about the indictment details “given the need to protect private student information and to allow the legal process to go forward.”

“Again, the safety and security of our students remains our focus at this challenging time,” the district said in the statement.

He is scheduled for arraignment Nov. 1.
