Head-on crash remains under investigation
Elyria police are investigating a head-on crash Feb. 19 near the intersection of East Avenue and Sixth Street, according to a media release from Capt. Christopher Costantino.
At 4:22 p.m., officers responded to the area and located a 2016 white Chevrolet Malibu with heavy front-end damage facing east in the northbound lane of East Avenue. The release said a tan Volkswagen Routan also sustained heavy front-end damage and was found facing north on East Avenue.
A 31-year-old Elyria woman was identified as the driver of the Malibu. The woman suffered “severe facial injuries,” according to the release, and she was later flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. The release said her condition is unknown.
A 76-year-old Lorain woman was identified as the driver of the Routan, and three of her granddaughters — ages 12, 9 and 6 — also were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, the release said.
The two older grandchildren claimed they were not injured, but the 6-year-old complained of head pain and a large bump was noticed on her head, according to the release.
The grandmother and her grandchildren were taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, but their conditions are unknown.
The grandmother and another witness claimed the 31-year-old woman traveled left of center and struck her Volkswagen head-on, the release said. Officers were unable to speak with the driver of the Malibu because of her injuries.
It is unknown if a medical condition or impairment contributed to the crash, according to the release. A blood test was taken on the 31-year-old woman and submitted for analysis.
No additional information will be released until the investigation is complete, the release stated.
