Second annual Preschool Arts Day held

- By Keith Reynolds

Students and their parents were invited to make some art Feb. 25 at the second annual Preschool Arts Day in Elyria.

The event, a joint effort between the Ready Set Go to Kindergarten Community Collaborative and the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning, was held at the Elyria Early Childhood Village, 42101 Griswold Rd.

Nicolle Bellmore Pierse, of horizon Education Centers, said that the previous year the event did not attain the attendance they were hoping so they adjusted the date for this year.

“In Elyria we really feel passionate about teaching the whole child, not just the academic side but also the fine arts side.” — Ann Schloss, director of academic services

through the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning.

“Everything from dramatists to storytellers, here’s a guy with a guitar, there’s a steel drum performance,

there’s going to be a flautist and cellist performance; so some pretty cool stuff that kids wouldn’t normally be exposed to,” she said.

The event also featured representatives from the Elyria Public Library signing children up for summer reading programs, the Lorain County Volunteer Connection making flash cards, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library signing children up for their free book service and more.

According to Ann Schloss, director of academic services for Elyria City School District, the day was designed to familiarize kindergartners and preschoolers with the schools and get them signed up.

“We are really excited about partnering with Ready Set Go to Kindergarten with all of the organizations and agencies that are part of our collaborative that is funded by United Way and some other local grants,” she said.

“(We wanted) to give them an arts experience,” she said. “In Elyria we really feel [passionate about teaching the whole child, not just the academic side but also the fine arts side,” she continued. “We’ve been working with the Center for Arts-Inspired Learning in many different capacities and this is our second year bringing them here for the arts day. It shows them that school can be fun too, not just books and pencils.”
