Shooting leads to 2 arrests
Two felony charges have been leveled against a 32-yearold Elyria man accused of shooting his gun during an altercation with another man Feb. 26, according to Elyria police Capt. Christopher Costantino.
Corey B. Simmons, who lives on Parmely Avenue, was charged with felonious assault and discharging a firearm at or near a prohibited premises, Costantino said.
Simmons did not enter a plea at his arraignment Feb. 27 in Elyria Municipal Court , according to court records.
Shortly before 5:15 p.m., officers responded to the 500 block of 12th Street for reports of a disturbance and possible gunshots.
While en route, officers learned that another caller saw a black male in red sweat pants and a red hat firing a gun at a male in gray sweat pants and a black hat, Costantino said.
Once in the area, officers located Simmons, who fit the caller’s description of the shooter, walking east in the 400 block of 12th Street.
Simmons then was taken into custody, Costantino said.
Officers learned through witnesses that a verbal altercation between Simmons and the 35-year-old male victim turned physical and punches were thrown.
Costantino said the victim attempted to exit the home, and while running away, Simmons fired at least two shots.
No one was injured during the shooting, Costantino said, but the victim was taken into custody on an active contempt of court warrant through the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.
A spent .45-caliber shell casing was located in a gravel driveway in the 500 block of 12th Street, but Costantino said the weapon involved has yet to be recovered.
Simmons was in jail on a $100,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for March 6.
