Shooting suspect arrested in Georgia
A fugitive sought in connection with the New Year’s Day shooting of a 48-year-old man in Elyria has been arrested, according to Elyria police Capt. Christopher Costantino.
Around 3 p.m. Feb. 28, Sam Killings Jr., 37, of Ninth Street in Elyria, was transported to the Elyria Police Department. A report regarding the incident said Killings was booked and interviewed before being transported to the Lorain County Jail.
During the interview at the Elyria Police Department, Costantino said Killings admitted to shooting the 48-year-old victim and trying to kill him two months ago.
The U.S. Marshals Service issued a statement last month indicating Killings was apprehended by a task force in Georgia.
Costantino said Killings was required to attend an extradition hearing prior to him being brought back to Elyria.
Killings waived extradition, meaning he agreed to return to Elyria.
He was wanted on a felonious assault warrant that stemmed from a shooting incident at 10:38 p.m. Jan. 1 in the 200 block of Lake Avenue.
At the time, Costantino said officers responded to the scene and located the 48-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the right bicep and right side of his buttocks.
The bullet that pierced the victim’s arm also struck his abdomen, Costantino said, explaining the man was taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center and then flown to Metro-Health Medical Center in Cleveland.
The man suffered serious injuries that required surgery, but the wounds didn’t appear life-threatening, Costantino said.
Killings fled the scene of the shooting prior to officers’ arrival and had been at large since. The following week, the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force named Killings the Fugitive of the Week.
The report regarding the transport of Killings show the suspect also was wanted on an active weapons under disability warrant. Elyria Municipal Court records show the warrant was issued Jan. 9.
Elyria Municipal Court records show Killings did not enter plea at his arraignment March 1. His bond was set at $200,000 between the two charges. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 2.
