Trash collection rates to remain frozen for 3 years

Sheffield Village Council entered into a memorandum of understanding March 13 with Republic Services for trash and recycling collection services.

The agreement maintains services already provided to the city and stipulates that rates will remain frozen for the next three years.

Sheffield Village Mayor John Hunter said Republic Services has contracted with the village for a number of years, and this ordinance maintains those rates and services over the life of the current contract.

“We worked out a memorandum of understanding that said they would do all these things, they wouldn’t charge a fuel fee and that they would hold the fee at the same rate for three years,” Hunter said. “They did that.”

When Sheffield Village approved the most recent contract earlier this year, collection rates did rise by 3 percent, officials said.

The ordinance provides that if another trash collection company comes into Sheffield Village, it must provide the same services at a cost no greater than Republic Services, Hunter said.

At the March 27 meeting, Council is expected to approve a number of contracts for Sheffield Village employees.

This includes contracts for the prosecuting attorney, solicitor and magistrate for the Mayor’s Court and the state certified building inspector.

In other business, Hunter said Council hopes to bid out the contract for re-paving work on East River Road by the end of July.

The Sheffield Village Service Department currently is filling in ditches in pre-paving work that is being paid for by the storm water fund at no additional cost to residents.

Council expects some of the funding for the paving project will come from a grant and they will provide updates as it moves forward.

Hunter is hoping to have the paving completed by year’s end.

Sheffield Village is putting together a list of roads that will be repaired over the summer, he said. The list should be compiled by April 1.
