The Tribe could not pick up a win in two tries on March 18. In split-squad action, the Indians fell to the Rangers, 8-4, and settled for a draw in a 10-inning affair with the Royals, 4-4.

Against the Rangers, Texas starter Dillon Gee gave up three runs on six hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings.

Indians starter Mike Clevenger walked four and gave up a hit and three runs in 1 1/3 innings.

Against the Royals, Shawn Morimando went three innings for the Indians, allowing three hits and a run in three innings.

Royals starter Travis Wood gave up two runs on five hits and a walk, striking out four in five innings. Illinois has hired Oklahoma State’s Brad Underwood as its new coach.

Underwood spent three successful seasons at Stephen F. Austin before signing on to coach Oklahoma State for 2016-17. The Cowboys got off to a rough start to Big 12 play before rallying with a 9-1 stretch that landed them an NCAA Tournament bid.

Underwood replaces John Groce, who was let go earlier this month.

Charley Hoffman finished a lot better than he started, closing with three straight birdies for a 1-under 71 that allowed him to catch Kevin Kisner for a share of the lead in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

They were at 11-under 205, three shots clear of Tyrrell Hatton, Marc Leishman and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Rory McIlroy birdied his last two holes for a 65 and climbed within five shots.

Penn State won its sixth NCAA team championship in seven years and five Nittany Lions wrestlers were set to compete for individual titles in the finals, which were not completed in time for this edition.

Penn State’s seventh overall national championship came in dominant fashion, much like the others since coach Cael Sanderson arrived before the 2009-10 season.

The Nittany Lions took an early lead in the team race on Thursday and didn’t look back, winning 30 of 36 combined matches and earning bonus points critical in the team race in 18 of them.

Zain Retherford (149), Jason Nolf (157) and Bo Nickal (185) helped the Nittany Lions pull away from second place Ohio State with six combined technical falls, five pins and one major decision.
