Readers share their peculiar food combinatio­ns

Recently, fast food restaurant KFC released publicity photos for a new product called the Chizza. The product consists of a chicken fillet, cheese sauce, and mozzarella cheese topped with ‘chicken ham’ and pineapple chunks. While it is only available in the Philippine­s at the moment, the publicity photos sparked a conversati­on on social media.

Were we too focused on thinking that we could make it to ask if we should make it? Could this unorthodox mash up of ingredient­s prove popular with consumers? And most importantl­y...Does pineapple really belong on a pizza?

All joking aside, this new product brought a serious question to mind...What are some food combinatio­ns that people enjoy that may seem unique and out-of-the ordinary?

Most readers said they enjoy peanut butter as an unconventi­onal topping.

Matilda Fonseca Rivera Cutright said that when her son was young he enjoyed eating peanut butter and tuna sandwiches.

“...all I did was watch him as he prepare [sic] his sandwich then (he) ate it with so much joy I didn’t say a word... , ” she said.

Another reader, Robbie Stokeley Marchand, said that her husband enjoys BLT sandwiches with peanut butter mixed in.

“His father started him on it when he was a kid,” she said.

Continuing the theme of adding peanut butter to sandwiches, Billie Ellis-Edgell said that her son enjoys peanut butter and bologna sandwiches.

“He tried to get me to try it once, I refused,” she said.

Reader Kathy Reich Nicol tried to encourage Edgell to try the sandwich.

“Do you like peanut butter? Do you like bologna? Try it... ,” she said.

Nicol also shared a unique combinatio­n that she enjoys, a peanut butter

and dill pickle sandwich.

“I wouldn’t normally admit this, but I know other people who also like it... ,” she said.

Jennifer Elliott shared a twist on the classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich that helped satisfy her cravings while pregnant.

“Peanut butter, grape jelly and Nutella sandwich on a wheat bread,” Elliott said.

“And the jelly has to be homemade. Was a pregnancy craving, but it is so good.”

While Elliott’s sandwich was created to help satisfy a pregnancy craving, reader Matt Collister’s wife’s food combinatio­n seems to be one that was passed down through the family.

“My wife puts peanut butter on bread, then spoons chili on top of it,” he said.

“Something she picked up from my father-in-law, which he picked up in the US Army.”

Reader Shannon Buchanan mentioned how a friend of hers enjoyed peanut butter with marshmallo­w fluff. According to New England Today, that sandwich is popular in the New England area — where it is known as a Fluffernut­ter.

“I would never try it,” Buchanan said.

Peanut butter was a popular topic among readers, but there is still debate whether pineapple belongs on a pizza.

“Pineapple is great on pizza,” said reader Michelle Anderson. “Anyone who says otherwise either doesn’t like pineapple or hasn’t even tried it.”

Other readers, however, beg to differ.

“Pineapple on pizza is for communists,” said reader Shawn Thornton.

But readers like Mike Shinhearl have decided to put aside difference­s and agree to disagree concerning the disputed topping.

“Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s not good,” he said.
