Sports shorts Tribe falls, 10-7

-

Carlos Santana belted a two-run home run in the fifth and Bradley Zimmer tripled, scored a run and had a pair of RBI, but the Indians dropped a 10-7 decision to the White Sox during spring training action in Goodyear, Ariz. The Indians, who left 18 runners on base, got 6 1/3 innings from Josh Tomlin. He allowed five runs in nine hits, walking none and striking out five.

“He got into the seventh, which was real good,” Tribe manager Terry Francona told MLB. com of Tomlin. “When he gets ahead, some balls have caught too much of the plate. And the way the ball is flying now, he’s paid for it. But I’ll tell you what: He’s situated where I think he feels good. He looks crisp.”

Fred Glass wanted to hire a proven winner for Indiana’s next coach. The athletic director didn’t have to wait long or travel far to find what he was looking for. Less than 24 hours after UCLA coach Steve Alford pulled his name out of the sweepstakes, Glass announced he had hired Archie Miller from Dayton.

The 38-year-old Miller comes from a basketball family and put together a solid track record in six seasons with the Flyers. He earned a school-record four straight NCAA Tourney bids, won 24 games in each of those seasons and claimed the last two Atlantic 10 regular-season titles. Dustin Johnson answered a rare challenge and Jon Rahm delivered another early knockout to advance to the semifinals of the Dell Technologies Match Play, staying on track for a potential showdown between No. 1 in the world and golf’s brightest new star. Johnson has looked so unbeatable this week that he led all 71 holes he had played until he lost a 3-up lead at the turn and was all square in his quarterfinal match when Alex Noren of Sweden holed a 40-foot birdie putt on No. 12. Johnson answered with three birdies in four holes and won, 3 and 2.
