City’s Little Queen entrants announced
The Mexican Mutual Society has announced that two contestants will vie for the title of 2017 Cinco de Mayo Little Queen.
The Little Queen will be determined on April 23 and will reign in the 20th annual Cinco de Mayo Parade on May 6.
The parade route starts at St. Francis Church at 2143 Homewood Drive and concludes on the corners of 29th Street and Pearl Ave.
This year’s contestants are Emely Leija and Korra Soto.
Emely Leija is six years old and is a first grade student at Washington Elementary School at 1025 W. 23rd Street in Lorain. Her parents are Guadalupe Zamarripa and Armando Leija. Emely enjoys playing soccer and loves to dance.
Korra Soto is six years old and is a first grade student at St. Anthony of Padua School at 1339 E. Erie Ave. in Lorain. Korra
likes the arts and dances
in the Alma de Mexico
dance group. Her parents
are Amanda Walker and Antonio Soto.
To qualify for the competition, Little Queen pageant director Marie Leibas said that girls must be Lorain residents between the ages of five and nine and be of Mexican heritage.
The event is open to the public and will feature entertainment by the Alma de Mexico Dancers and a DJ. The parade will feature Mexican food and a cash bar as well as Pinatas and games for children in attendances.
Mexican Mutual is inviting all community groups, organizations, bands, school groups, businesses, political and military organizations to participate in the parade. Those interested are asked to contact Angel Arroyo at 440258-3023 or Marie Leibas at 440-288-0144.
The Mexican Mutual Society at 1820 E. 28th Street was established in 1928 after a wave of immigration from Mexico the area, Leibas said. Members organized to help recent immigrants in the area to find jobs and housing. The Little Queen pageant was established around 1978.
