Girl Scouts deliver cookies

- By Kevin Martin

A group of first-year Girl Scouts paid visits to the Lorain Fire Department at 1350 Broadway to deliver 15 boxes of cookies to firefighters.

Girl Scout Troop 50426 of Lorain decided to take all of its money raised from donations and donate it to the people who keep our community safe.

The troop sold 2,700 boxes of cookies this year. After raising $164 in donations it gathered 41 boxes of cookies and delivered them in person split between the police and fire departments and LifeCare.

Troop co-leaders Nicole Carr and Sarah Barone said the girls were learning about respecting authority figures in their community and came up with the idea on their own to bring cookies to the departments.

“They took all of their donations to buy cookies for police, fire and LifeCare,” Carr said.

Carr said Girl Scouts normally use their donations to cover expenses for activities and materials, vests and other materials they use,

After presenting the department with five different varieties of the Girl Scouts staple product, Lt. John Callaghan and Dave Rabbett treated the eight Daisies, all between the ages of 5 and 7, to a fire safety demonstration and a chance to sit aboard the main engine, Pumper 1.

Callaghan and Rabbett were grateful for the cookies, but were less than optimistic about how long the 15 boxes will last around the station.

“They are going to go right to our bellies,” Callaghan said.

Captain Greg Neal said the department is always open and welcomes the opportunity to engage the community in

“These kind of things are awesome and we love giving tours and teaching fire safety. Makes them feel good in giving us cookies and we love to teach fire safety,” Neal said.
