Girls soccer is subject at board meeting
Clearview School Board talked about adding girls soccer at the high school, 4700 Broadway Ave. in Lorain.
Michael D. Kokinda Sr., a Clearview school board member, said girls soccer has been a club for a few years.
“We are considering adding that as a school sport,” Kokinda said. “At this point, we are using the work sessions to ask questions and gather information.
“If the information that comes back is positive and the financial forecast allows, it is
certainly possible that we add that sport.”
During a school board meeting March 27, board member Michael Post brought up the subject.
Post said he does not see how a soccer game could ruin a field more than a football game.
“If they’re going to have soccer, I would like to see them play right out here,” he said.
Kokinda said the board should ask the athletic director for recommendations.
Unlike football and basketball programs that bring in extra money for the district and fund athletics for other sports, the district will not be able to make money on soccer, Kokinda said.
“But we can control the costs,” he said. “There is public support for sure.
“We want to understand all the costs and consequences as they relate to district operations before bringing the item to a vote.”
Community members asked the board to consider girls’ soccer, Kokinda said.
Boys soccer was not requested, he said.
