The recent death of an infant who was in the care of a 13-year-old is being investigated as a homicide by the Lorain Police Department, according to a police report.

At 9:45 a.m., March 26, police responded to a residence in the 2900 block of Cromwell Drive for a 3-month-old boy in full cardiac arrest, the report said.

After arriving on scene, officers found the child without a pulse and minor stiffness in his extremities indicating he had been deceased for a period of time, making resuscitation impossible, the report said. According to the report: Officers found a small amount of dried blood on the child’s nose in addition to minor marks on his cheeks.

The child’s 30-year-old mother said she left the residence for work at about 9:30 p.m., March 25, for her overnight shift. She returned at 8 a.m., March 26.

The mother left her children in the care of the 13-year-old babysitter.

After returning home, the child’s mother said she checked on her son and did not notice anything out of order.

However, after receiving a delivery at 9 a.m., she checked on the child again when she noticed what she believed was dried blood on his nose and unsuccessfully attempted to wake

him at which point she called 911.

The babysitter told police she had arrived at the home at 4 p.m., March 25, and remained there throughout the night while the infant’s mother was at work.

She said she put the child back to sleep in his crib on the second floor of the residence at about 10:15 p.m. before falling asleep on a couch shortly after, according to the report.

The teen said she was awakened by the child’s mother at 9 a.m. when she began yelling at her

to dial 911, a request to which she complied, the report said.

Lorain County Coroner Dr. Stephen Evans said the final autopsy report was still being compiled and expects more information to be available in about a week.

Lt. Ed Super confirmed April 3 that a 3-month-old boy was found deceased March 26, which sparked the investigation. Super declined to comment further on any other details regarding the case, including whether a suspect had been identified.

The investigation remains ongoing.
