Info available for trash collection
Carts go to city residents this month
Lorainites who want more information about using the cart system for trash pickup can find it at the city’s website.
Starting this month, Republic Services will start automated trash collection in Lorain. Residents will get two new wheeled cans, or carts, one for trash and one for recyclable materials.
When residents take the carts to the curb, Republic Services will use trucks with large automated claws to pick up the cans and empty them into the truck beds.
“Like thousands of your neighbors in surrounding communities, you will be participating in a program that allows for greater recycling participation and helps make your neighborhood much cleaner on waste collection days,” according to the waste hauler.
Republic Services’ informational brochure was mailed out to city residents starting in March. The same information also was published at www.cityoflorain.org.
It also was distributed in a March 29 Ward 4 town hall meeting convened by Councilman Greg Argenti.
While the system is used widely in other communities, Lorain residents have debated whether the automated method will work in the International City.
Republic Services is asking Lorain residents to try their cans for a month before requesting smaller containers.
Anyone with questions about garbage collection, billing and senior discounts, should call Republic Services at 800-4331309.
Republic Services also refers to materials that residents should not put in their trash or recycling bins.
The Lorain County Solid Waste District offers a way to dispose of those items at its Collection Center at 540 S. Abbe Road, Elyria. It is a free drop-off center for materials not accepted in the garbage.
The center is open from noon to 6 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday.
The center accepts materials such as acids, toxic household materials such as bleach or roofing tar, electronic scrap such as computers and television sets, and scrap tires. It has a website with a list of acceptable and unacceptable materials.
For more information about the county Collection Center, call 440-3295440.
The county Solid Waste District staff promote responsible disposal of trash, recyclables and hazardous materials.
However, they are not able to answer questions about Lorain trash and recyclable collection, said Tiffany Barker, marketing coordinator for the solid waste district.
“Like thousands of your neighbors in surrounding communities, you will be participating in a program that allows for greater recycling participation and helps make your neighborhood much cleaner on waste collection days.”
