Browns will select Garrett and Trubisky

- Jeff Schudel

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is our second mock draft looking ahead to the NFL draft that begins April 27.

The first day of the NFL draft is less than three weeks away, and by now the Browns have gotten the answers to most of their questions about the 2017 draft class. Whether April 27 unfolds as the Browns hope it does will depend on the teams picking Nos. 2 through 11. In this, our second mock draft, we again have the Browns using the first pick on defensive end Myles Garrett from Texas A&M and the 12th pick on quarterback Mitchell Trubisky from Mentor High School and North Carolina.

The Jets, picking sixth, are starved for a quarterback, too,

but in this mock draft they take safety Malik Hooker from Ohio State — a change from quarterback Deshaun Watson in the March 18 mock draft. The Jets already have two young quarterbacks not ready to start in the NFL in Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty. They might shy away from Trubisky and Watson because neither of them is ready to start either.

The Browns will have defensive options galore if their quarterback plans are sabotaged. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey from Alabama should be available with the 12th pick.

Of course, the Browns have enough draft capital to trade ahead of the Jets if they really want Trubisky and get antsy about it. Tennessee picks fifth, and the Browns know from a year ago the Titans are willing trade partners.

1. BROWNS: Myles Garrett — defensive end, Texas A&M: Sashi Brown should take about five seconds to make the pick once the Browns are on the clock.

2. San Francisco 49ers: Solomon Thomas — defensive end, Stanford: Thomas won’t have to change his mailing address from his college days in Palo Alto.

3. Chicago Bears: Jamal Adams — safety, LSU: Opposing quarterbacks will have to know where Adams is on every play.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Leonard Fournette — running back, LSU: Ezekiel Elliott is proof picking a running back high can work.

5. Tennessee Titans: Marshon Lattimore — cornerback, Ohio State: The Titans get the best cornerback in a defense-heavy draft.

6. New York Jets: Malik Hooker — free safety, Ohio State: The Jets need a quarterback, but Hooker will produce immediately.

7. Los Angeles Chargers: Mike Williams — wide receiver, Clemson: Quarterback Philip Rivers is happy to get the best wide receiver in the draft.

8. Carolina Panthers: Jonathan Allen — defensive tackle, Alabama: The Panthers need help on the defensive line and Allen provides it.

9. Cincinnati Bengals: Reuben Foster — inside linebacker, Alabama: The Bengals need a linebacker after cutting Rey Maualuga.

10. Buffalo Bills: Corey Davis — wide receiver, Western Michigan: Williams or Davis — getting a receiver to pair with Sammy Watkins is a priority.

11. New Orleans Saints — Derek Barnett: defensive end, Tennessee: If not for Garrett, Barnett would be the best edge rusher in the draft.

12. BROWNS — Mitchell Trubisky: quarterback, North Carolina: The Browns have to worry about the Jets taking Trubisky sixth.

13. Arizona Cardinals — Deshaun Watson: quarterback,

Clemson: Watson will learn from coach Bruce Arians and QB Carson Palmer.

14. Philadelphia Eagles — Marlon Humphrey: cornerback, Alabama: The Eagles fill their top position need with Humphrey.

15. Indianapolis Colts — Dalvin Cook: running back, Florida State: Andrew Luck won’t have to win by himself with Cook in the backfield.

16. Baltimore Ravens — Haason Reddick: linebacker, Temple: Reddick puts some teeth into the Ravens pass rush.

17. Washington Redskins — Christian McCaffrey: running back Stanford: A running back that can catch is perfect for quarterback Kirk Cousins.

18. Tennessee Titans — O.J. Howard: tight end, Alabama: Titans tight end Delaine Walker has played 12 seasons.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — David Njoku: tight end, Miami: The Bucs’ pass offense should be very potent this season.

20. Denver Broncos — Ryan Ramczyk: offensive tackle, Wisconsin: The Broncos are happy to get the best tackle in the draft.

21. Detroit Lions — Takkarist McKinley: outside linebacker, UCLA: The Lions have to improve their pass rush to go deep into the playoffs.

22. Miami Dolphins — Taco Charlton: defensive end, Michigan: Charlton improved steadily. He had 13 sacks last season.

23. New York Giants — Cam Robinson: offensive tackle, Alabama: The Giants

need a middle linebacker, but they need a left tackle more.

24. Oakland Raiders — Tre’Davious White: cornerback, LSU: This is a deep draft for cornerbacks, which is fortunate for the Raiders.

25. Houston Texans — DeShone Kizer: quarterback, Notre Dame: The Texans thought they were going to get former Cowboys QB Tony Romo.

26. Seattle Seahawks — Garett Bolles: offensive tackle, Utah: Quarterback Russell Wilson needs better pass protection, pure and simple.

27. Kansas City Chiefs — Gareon Conley: cornerback, Ohio State: Defense was the Chiefs’ Achilles heel last season.

28. Dallas Cowboys — Jabrill Peppers: safety, Michigan: Peppers has the sizzle Cowboys owner Jerry Jones craves.

29. Green Bay Packers — Charles Harris: defensive end, Missouri: Note to Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford: Harris had 34.5 sacks at Missouri.

30. Pittsburgh Steelers — T.J. Watt: Outside linebacker, Wisconsin: This Watt plays with the same fire as his famous brother, J.J. Watt.

31. Atlanta Falcons — Zach Cunningham: inside linebacker, Vanderbilt: The Falcons have to improve defensively after that Super Bowl meltdown.

32. New Orleans Saints — John Ross: wide receiver, Washington: Drew Brees gets to throw to one of the fastest human beings on the planet.
