Basketball has been in Seth Wilson’s life since — well, since he could walk and talk.

“I started playing basketball when I was about 2 years old,” Seth said. “I had a miniature hoop — as my parents tell me — and I just sat there and shot the ball. It just came natural.”

The 14-year-old point guard is ranked as one of the top basketball prospects for the 2021 class in the nation.

At the age of 5, he said he began playing competitive basketball.

“From the moment I started playing actual games, I knew I loved it,” Seth said. “It’s hard to explain the passion that you can play with. It is really remarkable, I really just love the sport.”

Seth’s father, Donovan Wilson, former Morgan State football player and Lorain High School coach, was heavily involved with Seth’s basketball career.

At age 5, Seth was traveling with his father to Akron and Columbus to play against 7-year-olds because there were no competitive leagues 5-yearolds in Lorain.

He also played AAU for the King James Shooting Stars and he’ll play with the same group

this summer, although under a different name, Tru Game.

Seth currently is in Italy playing at the Junior International World Championship, which is a prestigious tournament for young basketball players.

He also has won over 20 MVP awards, won player of the year and multiple championships.

Seth’s heart belongs to basketball, but he also has been involved in other sports including track and field, and football, according to his mother, Angela Wilson.

“He played football at Westlake, broke the records for touchdowns,” Angela Wilson said. “He ran track, broke the records for the 100- and 200-meter dash for being the fastest seventh-grader in the school’s history.”

Donovan Wilson added, “We are very proud of the person he is and the athletic part is the icing on the cake.”

Seth’s passion for the sport comes from his family, who has a long history of athletes.

His uncles include Roy “Froggy” Davis at Clearview, who has the basketball scoring record; Paul Wilson, all-time leading scorer at Lorain Catholic; and Darrell Wilson, who played at Eastern Michigan University.

“I look up to my dad and my uncles because they have paved the way for sports,” Seth said.

Even though Seth’s family has been heavily involved in sports, he leads his own path, Donovan Wilson said.

“He is not in the shadow of his uncles or anybody else,” the elder Wilson said. “He is setting his own trail.”

Although Seth is being recognized for his basketball accomplishments from all over, remaining humble is something that has been instilled in him.

“It is a good feeling to know I am considered one of the best,” he said. “But, I tend to not think about it as much because I know there is always something I can improve on.”

His parents can take the credit for his humbleness.

“We let him know without God, he would not be,” Angela Wilson said. “Just like the talent was given, it can be taken away.

“But, also I think seeing his father suffer from kidney failure and going through dialysis five days a week makes him realize he could be in the same situation.”

Seth is being sought after by many high schools in and out of state, his family said. He and his parents are still deciding which school he should attend.

“The future is disclosed,” Seth said.
