Art show moves to Black River Landing
Dynamic learning through Lorain City Schools visual arts has resulted in an art show from 6-9 p.m., April 27, at the Transportation Center at Black River Landing in Lorain.
According to a news release from Jacqueline Murdock, visual arts coordinator at Lorain Schools:
A team of 10 certified visual arts teachers in the district will host the show featuring art created by students in kindergarten through grade 12 at 421 Black River Lane in Lorain.
“On any given day, you can enter a visual arts classroom in Lorain City Schools and become immediately aware that visual arts programs in this public school district are thriving,” Murdock said. “In fact, all students K-12 have access to these dynamic learning environments during the school day.”
Engaging arts activities promote learning styles that are the cornerstones of 21st century skills, such as creativity, collaboration, imagination, critical thinking and problem solving.
Also, a number of the students are creating artwork for portfolios for identification of giftedness in visual arts.
The designation could result in more opportunities for learning and future scholarships.
“We are grateful that the city of Lorain supports certified visual arts instruction in its public schools, and that they recognize it is an essential element in the future of Lorain’s children,” Murdock said.
According to studies, public funding of arts education encourages children in lower socioeconomic statuses to attend college.
For example, according to a study by the National Education Association, 71 percent of students from low socioeconomic status who participated in publicly funded arts programs attend college, compared with 48 percent of students without access.
The art show features two-dimensional and three-dimensional art projects by students, including painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and upcycled art pieces.
From 6-7:30 p.m., the Lorain High Jazz Band will provide music.
