Sports shorts Gladiators’ rally falls short

-

The Gladiators remain in search of their first win after a 62-61 loss at Tampa Bay on April 22. Randy Hippeard’s touchdown catch with 3.3 seconds left allowed the Storm to avoid a collapse after Cleveland overcame a 56-47 deficit with a minute to play.

Euclid native Michael Preston’s touchdown catch and a successful two-point conversion made it a one-point game. The Gladiators recovered an onside kick to set up Quentin Sims’ touchdown catch and take a 61-56 edge with 28 seconds left.

Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin is out for the remainder of the playoffs with a toe injury suffered in Friday night’s win against the Utah Jazz.

The team announced Saturday that the fivetime All-Star was diagnosed with an injury to the plantar plate of his right big toe. Griffin left Game 3 in the second quarter with what the team said at the time was a bruised toe. X-rays at the arena were negative, but he was re-evaluated after the game.

Griffin’s injury marks another playoff blow to a franchise that has dealt with a series of bad luck in recent years.

Griffin and point guard Chris Paul were lost to injuries last year, and the Clippers blew a 3-1 series lead against Houston in 2015.

The Detroit Tigers have placed first baseman Miguel Cabrera on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right groin.

Cabrera was injured while diving for a ground ball in the sixth inning of the Tigers’ game against the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. The 34-year-old slugger is hitting .268 with three home runs and nine RBI this season.
