Lorain man facing assault charges in incident

A 28-year-old Lorain man has been charged with serious crimes following an April 27 shooting and a car crash Avon police say are related.

Police first responded about 8:30 a.m., April 27, to the 1300 block of Chester Industrial Parkway for a shooting at TechniFab, Public Informatio­n Officer Jim Drozdowski said.

Joshua Avalos, 28, of Lorain was arrested at the crash scene and was charged with aggravated felonious assault and vehicular assault.

and transporte­d to University Hospitals St. John Medical Center in Westlake for minor injuries from the wreck, Drozdowski said.

According to the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, Avalos also was charged with dischargin­g a firearm on a prohibited premises. The Sheriff’s Office said Avalos resides in Sheffield Lake.

A short time after the shooting, officers were called to Colorado and Carleen avenues for a car crash, Drozdowski said.

When police arrived on scene, they located a male victim, a 37-yearold Elyria man, who was transporte­d to MetroHealt­h Medical Center in Cleveland for a gunshot wound to the back where he underwent surgery and was released, he said.

The victim was conscious and breathing at the time, Drozdowski said.

Police shut the area down following the incident before re-opening it to traffic around 1:26 p.m.

Bureau of Criminal Investigat­ion arrived on scene to assist in the crime scene processing, he said.

Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen praised the response of the city’s safety services for coming to the aid of the victim and conducting the investigat­ion.

“I think that our safety services did a great job in keeping everyone safe and I was pleased with the team effort,” Jensen said. “We never want to see anything like this happen in the city. But I was very pleased with the response.”

Avalos was transporte­d to the Lorain County Jail and police said the investigat­ion is ongoing with the possibilit­y of more charges being added.

According to county records, Avalos is scheduled to appear in court May 2.
