Rollover crash sends man to hospital
A rollover crash May 2 that injured a motorist on Route 58 in Wellington Township is under investigation by the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Elyria Post, according to a media release.
Around noon, first responders were dispatched to Route 58, north of PeckWadsworth Road, for a single-vehicle crash where the driver was ejected, the release said.
Phillip Smith, 26, of Wellington, was located on the east side of the road near his 2013 Volkswagen Passat and flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland in serious condition, according to the release.
The release said Smith was headed north on Route 58 when he traveled off the right side of the road for reasons still unknown to investigators.
Smith’s Passat slid into a ditch and continued until it struck a culvert, went airborne and flipped multiple times, the release said. His vehicle came to rest upright in the lawn of a residence on the east side of the road.
Smith, who was the only occupant, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the
crash, the release said.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The release said witness statements indicate reckless driving appears to be a factor in the crash, and alcohol and/or drug use is suspected but not confirmed.
The incident remains under investigation.
