The following are some of the events taking place in the Morning Journal coverage area to honor Memorial Day.

Cuyahoga County

• The Bay Village Foundation will host the 15th annual ceremony to install and dedicate permanent bronze plaques on Memorial Day. The ceremony will be at Cahoon Park at 10:30 a.m. May 29, across the street from the gazebo under the tent immediatel­y following the Veterans Memorial Day Service. TV personalit­y Jon Loufman will emcee the program, and the Bay High Honors Quartet under the direction of Carrie Singular will play before and during the program. Three students will be awarded scholarshi­ps and several volunteer groups will receive grants. The Village Foundation plaque program was establishe­d as a way for families and friends to give enduring recognitio­n to Bay citizens in one central place.

Lorain County

• The 30th annual vigil to remember the 98 men from Lorain County who died in the Vietnam War will be at 5 p.m. May 27 at the Lorain County Vietnam Memorial. The Memorial, dedicated in 2007, is located on N. Lake Street in Amherst next to the Amherst Police Station. The ceremony will include “The Reading of the Names” and a Vietnam Era Veteran Pinning Ceremony by the Nathan Perry Chapter NSDAR. Arrive between 4:30 and 5 p.m. to sign in for the pinning ceremony. The vigil will conclude at 10 p.m.

• The Amherst parade will take place at 10 a.m., May 29, following a short military honor service and taps in the Cleveland Street Cemetery. Veterans and parade participan­ts march south on Forest Street to Park Avenue and west to City Hall for the annual program which should take about 40 minutes. Lineup begins at 9 a.m. on Washington Street between Cleveland Avenue and Steele High School. Parents dropping off parade participan­ts are asked to use the Axtel Street entrance to the parking lot, or use a parking lot at Nord Middle School. • Avon activities set to honor fallen military heroes will begin at 9 a.m. May 29, with lineup for the parade along Detroit Road at the Avon Senior Center. It will finish at the Avon Center Cemetery, at the corner of Detroit Avenue and Route 83. After the parade, a memorial service will be conducted, Taps will be played and there will be a rifle salute. The annual Poppy Drive will be walking the parade route passing out poppies and flags.

• Avon Lake’s parade will begin at 10 a.m. May 29 at the high school with line up beginning at 9. All Blue Star and Gold Star mothers are invited to participat­e in the ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park at 10:45 a.m. on Monday. It is a 30-minute ceremony with lunch provided for the members of the American Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion at noon and open to the public at 12:30 p.m. The picnic lunch is free and it is the American Legion’s way of thanking the community for their many years of support.

• Elyria will be holding its annual parade at 10 a.m. on May 29. First Division will form on Second Street between Middle Avenue and Court Street, Court Street from Second to Broad Street. Second Division will form behind Elyria City Hall on Second Street. Third Division will form behind the Justice Center on Second Street (parking lot). Fourth Division will form on Second Street (between Middle Avenue and East Avenue) and will travel westbound on Second to Court Street. Parade registrati­on/informatio­n table will be located in front of Elyria City Hall on May 29 at 8:45 a.m.

• The Kipton/Camden/ Henrietta Memorial Day activities will be May 28. The parade lineup starts at 1:30 p.m. near Memorial Park on state Route 511 in Kipton and will end at the park. The program will start at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Park. Route 511 will be closed for the parade and program. For more informatio­n, call 440-775-3944.

• In Lorain, on May 25, flags will be placed at veterans’ graves at Ridge Hill Cemetery at 8 a.m.; and on May 26 they will be placed at Cavalry Cemetery at 8 a.m. followed by Elmwood Cemetery at 9. On May 28, flags placed at Salem Cemetery at 9 a.m. with a veterans memorial service at 11 a.m. Another veterans memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. at the Palace Theatre. Then, on May 29, DAV Post 20 will host a memorial service at 8 a.m. at Ridge Hill Cemetery, and American Legion Post 30 will conduct a memorial service at 8:30 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery. The parade will take place at 11 a.m. and then at 6 p.m. there will be a memorial service at AMVETS Post 47 with guest speaker Police Chief Cel Rivera and Mayor Chase Ritenauer.

• The North Ridgeville Lion’s Club and VFW Post 9871 will sponsor a parade with participan­ts lining up by 9:15 a.m. and then stepping off about 9:45 from the Marc’s parking lot. A service afterward at the old stadium immediatel­y following the parade. • Vermilion’s events will start at 8 a.m. with the Vermilion veterans dedication at Exchange Park, corner of Main Street and Liberty Avenue. At 8:45, there will be a veterans dedication at Maple Grove Cemetery, 8303 Cemetery Road. Then at 10:30 a.m., the parade kicks off in downtown, from Liberty Avenue to Victory Park. At 11 a.m., there will be a ceremony at Victory Park and then a luncheon at Vermilion Amvets, 1517 State Road.

• Join the Vermilion Yacht Club for a traditiona­l service at 12:30 p.m. May 29. During the service on the front lawn of the club, the local Vermilion High School band preforms a combinatio­n of current and military music. There also will be recognitio­n of those that have served both in the Armed Forces as well as the past commodores of the club. Current Bridge members will be recognized and presented with a burgee to fly on their vessel. The tradition also includes local clergy who will bless the fleet for safe travels and passage throughout the 2017 sailing season. As the service concludes, current Commodore Kym Custer will deliver the Memorial Day message. Immediatel­y following the ceremony, the club hosts a hot dog luncheon for up to 400 attendees. Finally, the club captains decorate and prepare their ships for the fleet parade, which proceeds out to Lake Erie and back to the club for a commodore and cannon salute, and then up the river before returning to anchorage.
