Fathers, daughters dance together

- By Khadija Smith

Fathers and daughters were the center of attention at the second Father and Daughter Dance hosted by Ambassador Brothers of Lorain County June 17.

Ambassador Brothers was formed in 2014 to empower people, change lives through direct action and present a positive image of diverse men in the community.

“Our mission is to serve the community from a broad range of members,” event coordinator T.J. Staton said.

Fathers and their daughters walked the red carpet as they entered the Lorain County Community College Spitzer Conference Center, 189-199 Innovation Drive in Elyria.

Tiffany Tarpley, morning reporter and host of We The People on Channel 3 news, was the MC for the night.

“I’m honored to be here tonight,” she said. “Fathers play a huge role in our young women’s lives.”

The event began last year after members of the Ambassador Brothers said they wished they had something like this when they were growing up, according to Staton.

“It was something that was

brought to the table; and we did it, because there was nothing like this around,” he said. “It was kind of an event where we would just see how it goes.”

The event has received great reception since last year, even causing the venue to be changed to accommodate the growth of the event.

This year, about 200 fathers and daughters participated — 60 more than last year.

Fathers and daughters were able to enjoy dancing, food and prizes.

Daughters ranging from 5 years old to 40 years old could partake in the program.

“Any one is welcome. We really just want to create that father daughter bond and help bridge that gap,” Staton said.

President of the Ambassador Brothers, Aric Bowens also was in attendance with his 10-year-old daughter, Aris Bowens.

“We are excited about having a bigger venue,” he said. “This is such a great experience for fathers and their daughters. I’m looking forward to having some fun with my own daughter.”
