Lorain’s new splash pad is almost ready to cool down residents.

A grand opening is scheduled at 11:30 a.m., June 21. The splash pad is near the site of the former pool at Central Park, 2800 Oakdale Ave.

K-Cream Korner will donate its signature orange twist ice cream for the first 100 people to attend the grand opening, said Linda O’Connor, administrative assistant for Lorain’s Public Property Department.

O’Connor helped coordinate plans for the pad with Public Property Manager Lori Garcia.

On June 16, public property and utilities staff turned on the water to test the control switch of the pad.

Its water features and nozzles will spray for 10 minutes when children touch the blue pillar at the corner of the 2,500-square-foot pad.

“Not unlike every other splash pad,” O’Connor said. “But this is ours.”

After 10 minutes, the sprinklers will shut off until restarted. Once completed, the splash pad will open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

The blue rubbery pad surface is surrounded by a flat concrete deck. Two benches sit next to the pad and two more will be added.

The pad was built by Foraker Enterprises Inc. doing business as My Splash Pad of Louisville. The contractor will visit the city again June 19 to fine tune the water flow and timing.

Anyone hoping to cool off before the opening is out of luck because the water will not be on.

During installation, the grass was torn up on the ground around the pad.

Currently, it is reseeded, but new grass needs to take root and grown around the pad.

Until then, there is a black fabric construction fence around the pad to keep it clean.
