Scholarships awarded to educators
Black River Audubon Society has awarded scholarships to three teachers to attend a weeklong environmental education camp on Hog Island off the Maine coast. Elyria’s Windsor Elementary teachers Laura Chachko and Renee Hiles, and Nothwestern’s Claire Nolan will learn knowledge and skills that will enable them to better connect their students will the concepts of environmental conservation and ecology. In addition to increasing their personal skills these educators will bring what they learn back to their school districts and to present to their colleagues’ understanding of our role in maintaining the balance in nature.
Hog Island has been a beacon of environmental education since it was established 75 years ago with noted directors such as Roger Tory Peterson. Campers will walk the same trails as Rachel Carson, the mother of the modern environmental education, who found solitude in this pristine spruce-fir forested island to formulate her thoughts into her books. This is the 38th year that Black River has sent interested educators to Audubon camps. Hog Island hosts some of the nation’s leading naturalists and environmental educators, such as Kenn Kaufman, Stephen Kress, and Scott Weidensaul.
