Chalk Walk adds beauty to sidewalks
The Lorain County Public Library System’s Avon Branch, 37485 Harvest Ave., hosted its first Chalk the Walk on July 7.
Children and families of all ages were welcomed to the Library where they were given the opportunity to help beautify the sidewalks outside of the building using their creative imagination.
The event is part of the Library’s “build a better world” theme for its summer reading program which is encouraging youngsters to get active and enjoy the benefits of reading and learning both indoors and outdoors.
“Today, we are just enjoying being outdoors and using chalk to make the sidewalks of the Library beautiful,” said Kelsey DeCoste, a library associate at the Avon branch.
DeCoste who oversaw the program with the help of some teen volunteers, said the timing of an early morning storm worked in the group’s favor as the heavy rain washed away sidewalk drawings from a prior event, clearing the way for another opportunity to beautify the area with fresh artistic creations.
After the storm cleared, the overcast afternoon welcomed people to drop-in and add some color to the library’s sidewalks.
“Our program this summer is ‘build a better world’ and is about making art and making that kind of build a better world and also just allowing families to spend time together,” DeCoste said. “That is promoting that as well.”
The Library System’s summer reading program runs through Aug. 5 with events held at branches around the county.
