Fenik’s Sweet Corn opens for the season
Fenik’s Sweet Corn is open for the season despite heavy winds that knocked down the farmers market stand.
Fenik’s Sweet Corn, 6413 Lake Ave. in Elyria, is open for the season despite heavy winds from a March 1 storm that knocked down the popular farmers market stand.
“We had to rebuild the stand because of the damage from the storm, but we have a new facility that is much more user friendly,” said owner Patrick Fenik. “And, we have a greater variety of foods now.” Fenik’s opened July 7. Steve and Louise Fenik, parents of Patrick Fenik, started to sell their produce in 1943 and the stand has been a staple in the county ever since.
The family sold sweet corn and strawberries at a small roadside table in front of their house on Lake Avenue.
Steve Fenik did the tilling, planting and picking with help from his sons while Louise Fenik sold the fruit and vegetables at the
stand and exchanged rec- ipes and crochet patterns
with many customers who became friends, according to its website.
Patrick Fenik and his brother John Fenik with help of their wives and children run the stand, do the planting and picking.
Local teenagers also help the family harvest the corn, Fenik said.
Fenik’s Sweet Corn is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week until Halloween, he said.
Customers can enjoy green beans, sweet onions, tomatoes, potatoes, cantaloupe, watermelon and peaches.
And during the fall, the stand will have pumpkins, gourds, winter squash and apples.
Fenik’s is especially known for their produce being fresh, Fenik said.
“We hand pick our produce daily, so it’s all fresh,” he said. “We don’t machine harvest because that can sometimes harm the produce.”
