Local briefs Event to offer benefits info for vets
Veterans and their families can learn how to claim benefits and services during the Veterans Experience Action Center scheduled for Aug. 1012 at the Western Campus of Cuyahoga Community College, at 11000 Pleasant Valley Road in Parma.
The free event brings together federal, state and county organizations dedicated to serving veterans. Specialists will be available to assist with filing or expediting benefit claims; health care enrollment and exams; issuing veteran identification cards; and more.
The Veterans Experience Action Center essentially serves as a claims clinic, providing a one-stop shop for answers and support, according to a Tri-C press release.
The Veterans Experience Action Center will run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Aug. 10; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Aug. 11; and 9 a.m. to noon, Aug. 12. Parking is free.

Heritage Center offers walking tour
The Oberlin Heritage Center, 73 ½ S. Professor St., is offering a 90-minute guided walking tour that shares stories of Oberlin’s famous freedom seekers and those known to have helped them make their way to freedom from slavery on the Underground Railroad.

New session for Women in Transition
The Women in Transition program at Cuyahoga Community College is launching a new session of classes designed to empower women in their pursuit of education, training and a career.
The program begins the week of Aug. 21 at four locations, including the Eastern Campus in Highland Hills and Corporate College West in Westlake. The eightweek, noncredit program is free and open to the public.
Participants build confidence and skills through classes on personal development, career exploration and financial and computer literacy.
Registration is required for the program, which offers day and evening class options.
The schedule is as follows, by location:
• Eastern Campus, 4250 Richmond Road, Highland Hills — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Aug. 21 to Oct. 11; 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 22 to Oct. 12.
• Corporate College West, 25425 Center Ridge Road, Westlake — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 21 to Oct. 12.
