Sports shorts Beltre joins the 3,000-hit club

Adrian Beltre had a feeling like none other he’s experienced on a baseball field when he saw his three children charging toward him. Then they kept running to the wall in right-center field.

Only after helping unveil a logo commemorating Beltre’s 3,000th career hit did the kids return to hug their father, the 38-year-old Texas Rangers third baseman who had just become the first player from the Dominican Republic, and 31st overall, in the major leagues to reach the mark.

“What happened today after the hit, it was the best moment in my life,” Beltre said Sunday. “When I saw that, I felt like I was in the cloud, because I really saw the joy in their faces. It was a nice moment to enjoy with them, my family, my wife.”

Beltre hit the milestone with a double in the fourth inning of a 10-6 loss to Baltimore Orioles, who got homers from Jonathan Schoop and Welington Castillo in a five-run fifth.

“It’s an honor to be here for it. Especially, we couldn’t have drawn it up better where we win and we get a chance to see that,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “Everybody in the game has a lot of respect for him, not only statistically but the way he’s handled success over the years.”

The Rangers were already down 4-0 when Beltre, who finished his 2,771st career game 1 for 5, had a hard hit down the line — fittingly past third base.

Jhonattan Vegas successfully defended his RBC Canadian Open title at Glen Abbey, beating Charley Hoffman with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff.

Vegas’ approach from the left bunker in the playoff on the par-5 18th hit the grass just above the sand lip and went through the green. The 32-year-old Venezuelan chipped to a foot — after racing a chip past the hole in regulation from the same area en route to a par — and won when Hoffman’s birdie try from the back bunker slid past the hole.

Josef Newgarden knew he had a good car and didn’t waste time showing it.

Newgarden dominated at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course to win the Honda Indy 200 on Sunday for his second straight IndyCar victory. He moved from fourth to first in the series points standings, seven points ahead of Helio Castroneves.

Newgarden led 73 of the 90 laps on the 2.258-mile course to finish 5.156 seconds ahead of Team Penske teammate and pole-sitter Will Power. He also won at Toronto on July 16 and has six career wins, three this season.
