A 34-year-old Sheffield Township man was sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine Aug. 4 for possession of 13 bricks of marijuana.

Alexis N. Guzman, 34, pleaded guilty June 8 to an amended indictment of four counts of possession of drugs, two counts of having weapons under disability and single counts of receiving stolen property, possession of criminal tools and drug paraphernalia.

Thirteen bricks of marijuana, two small bags of suspected cocaine, one small bag of suspected heroin and a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol were found in Guzman’s Bond Avenue home Nov. 10, 2015, according to a news release at

Cook said if Guzman fails to report by the appointed time, not only would he issue a warrant for his arrest, but also impose a new sentence.

the time.

According to the release, he called police claiming he’d been shot at by three men who forced their way into the house. Eight shell casings were found at the scene by Lorain County Sheriff’s Office deputies, but nothing was taken from the residence.

Guzman had an idea of what Lorain County Common Pleas Court Judge D. Christopher Cook would sentence him to as he walked into the courtroom shortly after noon Aug. 4.

Cook previously had said he was considering a four-year prison sentence, but the question was when he would begin to serve the punishment.

Michael Stepanik, Guzman’s attorney, highlighted his client has stayed out of trouble in the nearly two years since the incident and requested some time for him to get his affairs in order before reporting to the Lorain County Jail.

“He and I have some stuff to do before he reports,” Stepanik said.

Cook said Guzman had

two months since his plea to get his affairs in order. However, Cook allowed Guzman to report at noon Aug. 11.

The judge warned Guzman about the penalties if he does not show up.

“Here’s the way this works,” Cook said. “Your sentencing that I just gave you, four years aggregate, is not a final sentencing order until I sign it and it’s filed with the court. So, right now, everything is sort of in the air.

“Soon as I know, next Friday, that you’ve turned yourself in and upheld your end of the bargain, I’ll uphold my end of the bargain,” Cook said.

Cook said if Guzman fails to report by the appointed time, not only would he issue a warrant for his arrest, but also impose a new sentence.

Cook also said Guzman will be eligible for judicial release after serving six months.
