Perusek gallops for 256 yards and two TDs as Eagles take annual dustup with Midview

Avon dominated visiting Midview in the annual Southwestern Conference showdown Sept. 22, winning, 42-21, to remain undefeated and take sole possession of first place in the conference.

Sophomore Nick Perusek had a breakout game for the second-ranked Eagles (5-0,

4-0), rushing for 256 yards and two touchdowns — the first multi-score game of his career — including a 74yard run on the second play of the third quarter to give Avon a 21-7 lead.

“It was a lot of the line and then I kind of just took off from there and I was gone,” Perusek said of the run. “When I run I kind of just focus in and I don’t even think. My body just kind of does it.”

“Nick Perusek’s not a secret for anyone in Avon,” Eagles coach Mike Elder said. “We’ve been watching him do things like that since seventh grade. He had a great night tonight . ... To-

night was Perusek’s night to be explosive.”

Junior quarterback Ryan Maloy had another outstanding performance

for the Eagles, going 14of-19 with 183 yards and a touchdown and added 114 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Mark Steinmetz added two carries for 11 yards a pair of touchdowns.

No. 6 Midview (4-1, 3-1) struggled to stop Avon’s

ground game all night as the Eagles tallied 335 rushing yards, and as the game progressed and tension on the field grew, the Middies couldn’t stop the game from getting out of hand as penalties continued to rack up.

“That’s on me,” Midview coach D.J. Shaw said. “As a

head coach I have to keep my cool better and, you know, our guys feed off of me and that’s completely my fault and it’s not going to happen again.

“I just felt like there were some plays we could’ve made that we didn’t make and (Avon) made them, so

credit to them.”

After going three-andout on its opening two possessions, Midview finally got a rhythm going late in the first quarter, driving all the way to the Avon 27-yard line before a costly fumble inside the 10 handed the momentum right back to

the Eagles.

Connor Wolfe had 19 carries for 124 yards for the Middies while Seamus Higley went 18-of-34 with 250 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Avon travels to Westlake Sept. 29 while Midview travels to Berea-Midpark.
