The Clearview defense set the tone, but the Clippers offense closed the game out against Brookside on Sept. 22, as they topped them at home, 50-6.

Clearview, which improves to 4-1, had two defensive touchdowns while the offense racked up 413 yards of total offense against the Cardinals’ defense.

Brookside, which drops to 1-4, turned the ball over on the second play of the game, as junior defensive back Jaylen Paschel returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown.“I was trying to score there,” Paschel said. “I was just trying to set the tone for the team so we could get some momentum going.”

On their first series, the Clippers drove 73 yards as senior running back Drew Engle picked up his first of three touchdowns of the night on a one-yard run.

Brookside, which entered Week 5 averaging 17 points per game, continued

to struggle, as it had a total of one yard of offense in the first quarter.

Clearview managed to score just one touchdown in the second quarter, as senior quarterback Anthony Terry connected on a 25yard pass to senior receiver Gee Newton.

Brookside cut the Clippers’ lead to 17 in the first half, as senior kicker Owen Rozanc hit a 35-yard field goal with 1:31 left in the second quarter, making it 20-3.

The Clippers carried their momentum into the third quarter, as Engle picked up his second rushing touchdown on an 11yard run, giving Clearview a 26-3 lead after the twopoint conversion was no good.

Brookside then went three and out on its next two offensive series, but it was Engle who struck again for Clearview, this time on a 70-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 34-3 after another successful twopoint conversion.

“He’s (Engle) been a running back ever since he’s been a young kid,” Clearview coach Mike Collier said. “His vision and patience behind the offensive line is exceptional. To see him wait and plant his foot and go is fun to watch, but we have a bunch of other running backs that contribute any chance they get, too.”

Another Clearview running back who put up points was senior Nomar Salas, who late in the fourth quarter scored on a 65-yard touchdown run.

Defensively, the Clippers managed to hold the Cardinals to just six points and 23 yards of total offense, while scoring once more, as senior linebacker Kahliel Fenderson had a 36-yard fumble recovery.

“Our defense has led us all year long and they continue to make plays and put points up and get takeaways every single week,” Collier said. “If we continue to do that we’re going to be tough.”
