Eagles top Demons, remain unbeaten

- By Chris Coon

It was cold, it was homecoming night and it started off sloppy, but Avon was able to top Westlake on the road, 55-21.

The Eagles, who had five penalties to Westlake’s four in the first half, improved to 6-0 on the season and 5-0 in the Southwestern Conference, while the Demons drop to 0-6 and 0-5 in league play.

“I thought our kids came out tonight and played hard,” Avon head coach Mike Elder said. “Westlake has really good coaches and good players and their quarterback did some really good things for them tonight.”

It only took seven plays on their first series of offense for the Eagles to get on the board first, as junior quarterback Ryan Maloy hit senior David Orlando on a 23-yard touchdown pass.

However, Westlake would answer back with a score of its own on a nine-play, 80yard drive the very next series when quarterback Billy Blood connected with Jacob May on a nine-yard touchdown pass, tying the game, 7-7.

Avon answered right back as Maloy connected with Chris Mullins for a 77-yard touchdown, making it 14-7 in the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the Eagles in the second quarter would tack on two more touchdowns, this time on the ground as senior Tony Eberhardt scored from 13 yards

out followed by a 21-yard run from Maloy.

The Eagles would carry their offensive momentum from the first half into the second, as Maloy once again found Mullins in the end zone, this time on the first play of the third quarter for a 77-yard touchdown pass.

Despite being down three touchdowns, the Demons were able to put a solid drive together as James Coleman scored on a one-yard touchdown run, making it 35-14 in the third quarter.

“I thought (Westlake) had a very good game plan coming in,” Elder said. “They did some really nice things, and Westlake’s program deserves a lot of credit because they played us really hard tonight.”

Westlake’s defense would allow four more touchdowns, but it did manage to pick up a touchdown on defense as defensive lineman Matt Schuler scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery midway through the fourth quarter.

Offensively, Avon recorded four touchdowns on the ground and five in the air, while picking up 533 total yards of offense.

“We played a lot of kids tonight,” Elder said. “I thought we got better tonight and therefore I’m very excited about that. We’re 6-0, we came out healthy and again. Coach Hall is a very good friend of mine and he’s a very good football coach.”
