Follow the crumbs with the Cupcake Crawl

The Cupcake Crawl runs from Oct. 1 to Oct 31, and features signature cupcakes from across Lorain County.

It may seem a bit decadent to have cupcakes for breakfast, but according to local bakeries, people did just that for the opening day of the Lorain County Cupcake Crawl on Oct. 1.

The crawl is one of two initiatives put on by Visit Lorain County this month as a way to draw business into the area. It runs from Oct. 1 to Oct 31, and features signature cupcakes from Kiedrowski’s Bakery in Amherst, Small Town Sweets in Vermilion, Blue Rooster Bakehouse in Oberlin, Little Devil Cupcakery in Amherst, The Hive Cake Studio in Amherst, A Cupcake A Day in Medina as well as Kelsey Elizabeth Cakes in Avon Lake and Rocky River.

Before one sets out on the sweet trail, they are advised to download and print a passport from visitloraincounty.com/cupcake-crawl/ which includes a map to each participating bakery and a special section where workers at each bakery can sign. The first 250 people to fill their passports will receive a t-shirt.

According to Bonnie Hite, of Kiedrowski’s, 2267 Cooper Foster Park Road, the local confectionery saw an uptick in its Sunday morning business as people piled in to get one of their specialty anise cupcakes with sea salt frosting and topped with a gummy.

Hite said the bakery had sold quite a few of the indulgent delicacies throughout the day, and at 12:30 p.m. when The Morning Journal stopped by there were only four left.

Two of those four cupcakes were snatched up by Beth Schaefer, 49, of Lorain, and Mary Jankowski, 69, of Vermilion.

These cupcake connoisseurs said they were trying to follow the path, but found that most of the listed bakeries were closed on Sundays.

“This is our first one,” Schaefer said. The two were expecting Kiedrowski’s’ outing to be delicious, and could barely wait to dig in to the delicate delicacies.

“I think it’s great,” Jankowski said of the event as a whole. “You see lots of other crawls, like bar crawls and things like that, but a cupcake crawl is great.”

With their sweets in tow, the pair said their next stop was the Blue Rooster Bakehouse, 38 South Main Street in Oberlin, which was also open Oct. 1.

“I wish they were all open today, because it’s such a beautiful day for a ride,” Jankowski said. “Guess we’ll have to go another day.”
