Gun laws won’t stop mass shootings

-

A little history: The people of the United States wanted beer and wine, so in 1933, threequarters of the states ratified the 21st Amendment to our Constitution, repealing the 18th Amendment, making alcohol legal again. That’s the way it’s done. We can debate and debate, and politicians can pontificate, but if the majority of Americans don’t like one of our Amendments, repeal it.

Please stop this same debate that happens every time there is a mass shooting.

Think about Chicago, where they have very strict gun laws. There have been at least 500 shooting homicides in the city this year (as of Oct. 6, according to CBS Chicago — Editor’s note).

And not a peep about that out of the liberals who tell us we need more gun laws.

The Second Amendment says in part: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” So stop infringing it. If we don’t want Americans to have guns, repeal the Second Amendment. Otherwise, enough is enough.

Criminals pay no attention to gun laws. That is why they are called criminals. In our country, a man used fertilizer to blow up a federal building. In France, a man used a truck to mow down people. Are we going to outlaw fertilizer and trucks?

It is fair to say that our Founding Fathers never envisioned a repeating gun, much less one that is fully automatic. We do have laws regulating machine guns, but the shooter in Las Vegas got what amounted to a fully automatic one anyway. So much for gun laws.

We need to concentrate on finding the people who will do us harm, not what they will use for their mayhem. Don Race New London
