Police: Woman drives off cliff into valley

A female driver drove a car off the cliff in the 2300 block on Vermilion Road at 11:15 p.m. Oct. 19, according to a news release from the Vermillion Police Department.

The car was found 50 feet down the cliff that drops into the Vermillion River valley, the release said.

A male passenger was able to make it back up to the road, according to the release.

The ages, names and residences of the driver and passenger were not listed in the release.

The female driver had exited the vehicle, but had fallen, and was lying against a tree 50 feet farther down, the release said.

Officers descended the cliff and were able to stabilize the woman until the Vermillion Fire Department arrived, the release said.

Firefighte­rs stabilized the officers and woman with ropes and then sent down a Stokes Rescue Basket to rescue the woman, according to the release.

The woman was transporte­d to MetroHealt­h Medical Center in Cleveland via North Central Air Care and she didn’t appear to have any serious injuries at the time, the release said.

Police discovered the woman had left the roadway while negotiatin­g a curve in the road, the release said.

The vehicle traveled 420 feet through the woods and the police suspect the woman was driving under the influence, according to the release.

The accident could have been fatal and is a reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving, the release said.
