Holy Trinity School honored for excellence
School lauded for excellence in STEM education
The Ohio Academy of Science has selected Avon’s Holy Trinity School to receive the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education for accomplishments in the 2016-17 school year, according to a news release.
The award recognizes schools and teachers who display excellence in STEMbased teaching, the release said.
Holy Trinity, 2610 Nagel Road, is among 58 Ohio schools honored based on four categories ranging from hosting a science fair to student participation in science activities outside of the classroom, according to the release.
A team of 11 teachers and administrators collaborated during the 2016-17 school year to apply for the distinction, the release said.
Junior high science teacher Nicole Castrigano, a contributor to the school’s application, expressed appreciation for the commitment of her fellow teachers.
“It is an honor for Holy Trinity School to be recognized for our efforts in STEM education,” Castrigano said in the release. “As teachers, we strive to provide our students with opportunities to learn technology, math and engineering concepts to enhance our science curriculum, both in and out of the classroom.”
First established in 1986, the award recognizes Ohio schools and teachers who stimulate scientific student research and technological design, and extend opportunities beyond traditional classroom activities, according to the release.
In order to qualify, students must participate in one or more youth science opportunities beyond the classroom, including State Science Day, The Ohio Academy of Science Annual Meeting, Buckeye Science and Engineering Fair, Science Olympiad, and other STEM-related youth activities, the release said.
“This award really speaks to the amazing teachers and dedicated staff at Holy Trinity,” said Co-Principal Mike Modzeleski, in the release. “These teachers continuously work at their craft as educators, and it is great to see them recognized for all of their efforts.
“The honor from the Ohio Academy of Science highlights our goal of providing students at Holy Trinity with the skills they need to be successful well after they leave our building.”
