The costume trends for the 2017 Halloween season feature new entries and some old favorites.
“For us it has definitely been the ‘Descendants,’” said Laurie Mayo, manager of Party Place in Elyria. “It is something we can’t keep in the store. It’s by far the most popular for kids.”
The costumes based on the popular Disney Channel original movie won’t be resupplied for this season, Mayo said.
“People who are looking for ‘Descendants’ costumes should probably go for their second choice,” she said.
Traci Virant, the manager of Spirit Halloween in Elyria, was also sold out of the ‘Descendants’ costumes.
“Those are the costumes all the kids want this year, and you will be hard pressed to find one,” she said.
Adults have been gravitating toward costumes based on the 1993 film “Hocus Pocus,” Virant said.
“That movie is popular with people that grew up watching it, who are adults now, and are buying costumes,” she said. “The movie is almost 25 years old and the nostalgia is what brings these costumes back.”
“Stranger Things,” the popular Netflix show, has been a popular costume this year as well, Virant said.
“We have all the characters from the show,” she said. “That’s another Halloween-related property that has gained popularity over the past couple of years.”
Despite the new costumes, Halloween still has its traditional favorites, Mayo said.
“Harley Quinn is still largely popular this time of year,” she said.
“We also have the typical witches, ghosts, goblins, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and other mainstays.”
