Sports shorts Union files on Elliott’s behalf

-

The union for NFL players has asked a judge to temporarily delay the effect of her ruling permitting the league to enforce a six-game suspension of Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott over domestic violence allegations.

The NFL Players Association filed the papers Tuesday in Manhattan federal court. It said it wanted Judge Katherine Polk Failla to suspend her Monday ruling so attorneys can appeal it to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

If she doesn’t, lawyers for the union said they will ask the Manhattan appeals court to temporarily suspend her decision. The lawyers asked the judge to rule on the request by 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Elliott was suspended in August after he had several physical confrontations in the summer of 2016 with his then-girlfriend

New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

The suspension takes effect immediately, meaning Jenkins will miss Sunday’s home game against the Rams.

Jenkins was told Tuesday he was suspended. Coach Ben McAdoo said he will review the status of the suspension next week.

Jenkins is the second Giants cornerback to be suspended this month. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was suspended on Oct. 10 after he left the team’s facilities before a practice. Rodgers-Cromartie missed the team’s Oct. 15 game at Denver, where the Giants won 23-10.

Chicago Bears coach John Fox says tight end Zach Miller is “progressing well” following surgery to save his left leg.

Miller remains hospitalized in New Orleans after tearing an artery while dislocating his knee trying to make a touchdown catch in Sunday’s loss to the Saints. He likely tore ligaments, though the more immediate issue is the vessel.

Blood clotting is a concern. So is nerve damage, though Fox wasn’t sure if there was any.

The NFL says Miami Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso won’t be suspended for his hit that sidelined Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco with a concussion.

Flacco was hurt in the Ravens’ 40-0 victory Thursday when he slid and was then hit in the head by Alonso, who received a penalty for unnecessary roughness. Alonso said the high hit was unintentional, but angry Ravens players said he should have been ejected for a dirty play.

Miami coach Adam Gase defended Alonso, saying Flacco was trying to run for a first down before he slid.

Flacco missed the rest of the game. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said there’s a good chance Flacco will return to play Sunday at Tennessee.

Alonso still faces a possible fine.

Beaumont Enterprise is reporting Alabama safety Deionte Thompson and three other men have been indicted on charges stemming from a spring break fight.

The 20-year-old Thompson faces a second-degree felony charge of aggravated assault, causing serious bodily injury, according to the newspaper.

Also charged are 19-year-old Morris Joseph, Jr., 19-year-old Rufus Joseph and 21-yearold Daletredricc Wolfford.

A Galveston County grand jury returned the indictments last week, saying the four men caused “serious bodily injury to Noah Frillou” by hitting or kicking the 18-year-old.
