BAY VS. ST. FRANCIS DE SALES

-

For the fifth time in his illustrious career, Bay coach Bobby Dougherty will embark to Columbus for the pinnacle of his sport on Nov. 11 at MAPFRE Stadium against rival Columbus St. Francis de Sales. But those previous four appearances in a state title game — 2005, ’09, ’14, and ’ 15, all ended with losses.

That’s why when his players were asked after their 2-1 state semifinal win over Aurora on Nov. 8 how badly they want to win one for him — none of them could hide the grin on their faces.

They want to win for themselves, family and community. But they want to “win one for Bobby” too.

“The things I would do to win a championship for Bobby. Oh man, I love that guy,” junior forward Cade Gergye said. “He knows that we all want to win it for him.”

The Bay boys team last won a state title in 1993.

the drought. De Sales (21-01) is the top-ranked team in the state in Division II, and defeated Bay in the finals in 2014 and ’15. In the second game of the year, the Rockets fell to them, 4-2.

The scariest part about the Stallions is how they pose a suffocating defensive third — allowing eight total goals on the season.

Bay has won a school-record 16 in a row after a 1-4-1 start, but is still considered an underdog. But Gergye didn’t mince any words when asked if he wants them again.

The “revenge factor” is on their minds.

“I would love to play them again,” he said. “We lost to them 4-2 in the regular season with a man down with a red card, but I want to see them again.”
