Military veterans were honored at Horizon Science Academy on Nov. 10 at the Veterans Day Breakfast.

While eggs and bacon were being served, military veterans and students at Horizon Science Academy stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and honored all veterans Nov. 10.

Horizon, 760 Tower Blvd. in Lorain, hosted its seventh Veterans Day Breakfast in honor of veterans in and out-of-duty.

Veterans enjoyed breakfast with nieces, nephews, grandchildren, friends, etc. and received gratitude from students and staff, according to Jayson Bendik, assistant principal at Horizon.

“This breakfast is a way to give back to our veterans for the sacrifices they have made,” Bendik said. “It’s because of people like this our school exists.”

Horizon’s staff also invited friends or family whom are veterans to come and enjoy breakfast, as well.

Bendik said the events started out as large assemblies in the beginning, but the thought of a breakfast would create more of an interaction and intimate discussions

between students and veterans.

To honor veterans during breakfast, first-graders wrote thank-you letters that were placed on each table as a gift for a veteran.

A class of third-graders also performed a drill to

thank the veterans for all they have done.

After the breakfast, some veterans offered their time to speak to individual classrooms about experiences, sacrifice, commitment, hard work and what veteran is, Bendik said.

“These veterans love (the event) and it’s a great opportunity for students to connect with them,” he said.

Michelle Wright, Army veteran from Lorain who served from 1989 to 1999, spent her breakfast with neighbor and fifth-grade student Emmanuel Rosario.

Wright said she served during many memorable times and in many places such as Desert Storm, Germany, Texas, Virginia, South Carolina and more.

She said she goes to many events — like the breakfast held at Horizon — this time of year.

“I think events like these are wonderful,” Wright said. “Especially for veterans who served during WWI, WWII and the Korean War. I don’t feel like they got the recognition they deserved, so events like these, I enjoy seeing the looks on their faces.”
