Mercy Regional Medical Center unveiled their newly renovated cafeteria in a ceremony on Nov. 14 at 3700 Kolbe Road in Lorain.

The new CommStar Bistro came to life through a collaboration between Mercy and CommStar Credit Union featuring a completely renovated space.

The process for the $250,000 renovation began two years ago following a meeting between Mercy Foundation of Lorain County President Scott Pember and current CommStar CEO David Jezewski leading to the creation of the fresh new space.

The renovation is the second named wing at Mercy following the unveiling of the Veard Family Birthing Center on May 18 and Pember said Mercy welcomes opportunities for future naming opportunities from families or businesses.

“Two years ago Dave and I talked about this. And I said, you know, there are about 800 folks that go through our bistro or cafe

every day. It sounds like a good place to get some exposure. And Dave immediately saw the opportunity and said yes,” Pember said. “It has been a two year progress of ideas and changes and different ideas that have come to this point where we now have actual televisions where people can walk in and watch the Food Channel.”

Jezewski, an Elyria native, said he saw the initiative as an opportunity to align two organizations with shared values for serving the community.

“We are here to announce our commitment to our relationship with Mercy and help them provide a new space for people to break bread and to heal, to relax and share with each other. We also have a new space for folks to connect with our offices.”

Mercy President and CEO Edwin Oley served on CommStar’s Board of Trustees for five years and noted as recently as a month ago they were still making changes to the furniture and the color of the walls to make the final product perfect for employees and guests for years to come.

“They made a significant contribution to that project to help us to be able to afford to do this. They really went to no ends to deliver us a high quality project here.”
