Concert to help Hurricane Maria victims

“A Band-Aid for Puerto Rico,” an event aimed at providing support for those affected by Hurricane Maria, will take place from 4 to 8 p.m., Dec. 2, at the Lorain High School auditorium, 2600 Ashland Ave.

The Lorain Art Council, El Centro de Servicios Sociales Inc., Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center in Cleveland and the Puerto Rican Culture Community are sponsoring the concert.

“This event is about raising awareness and helping those in Puerto Rico who are really hurting right now,” said Antonio Barrios, president of the Lorain Art Council. “There’s a lot that is going on in Puerto Rico that isn’t getting the proper coverage and attention.”

Barrios said Puerto Ricans are without food, water and power.

“Few people realize how bad it has gotten down there,” he said. “That’s why this event will aim to raise awareness for Puerto Rico and allow people in our community to provide their support.

“Many view Puerto Rico as its own entity apart from the United States, and that is why the media coverage has stopped.”

Barrios said the event will allow people to give cash donations which directly go to help the people.

“We tried to send semitrucks filled with water and other supplies, but that was a logistical nightmare,” he said.

Barrios said this is the perfect event and cause for Lorain to rally behind.

“Lorain is 26 percent Latino, and a majority are from Puerto Rico,” he said. “It only makes since for Lorain to support Puerto Rico.

“But I also feel the support shouldn’t be limited to only the Latino community. Lorain, as an entire community, should use an event and cause like this to come together and really make this a world relief event. Maybe, then the government will start to take notice.”

Barrios said the event will feature local bands.

“There will be something for everybody,” he said. “Come out and show your support, it should be a great show.”
