Heisman watch

Ohio State fans have been here before.

It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, if when the College Football Playoff semifinals are announced Dec. 3, the big drama could be between a possible two-loss conference champion and a one-loss team that didn’t make its conference championship game.

It happened a year ago when 11-1 OSU got a CFP spot ahead of 11-2 and Big Ten champ Penn State.

This scenario is different. It won’t be conference foes battling for a playoff spot.

If the Buckeyes defeat 12-0 Wisconsin in the Big Ten Title game Dec. 2, they will be 11-2, with their two losses to Oklahoma at home by 15, and by 31 at Iowa.

Meanwhile, 11-1 Alabama is sitting out the SEC title game after losing at Auburn, 26-14.

Let’s break down what we know about the CFP:

• The winner of the SEC title game between 11-1 Georgia and 10-2 Auburn is in. The loser is out.

• The winner of the ACC title game between 10-1 Miami (Fla.) and 11-1 Clemson is in. The loser is out.

• If 11-1 Oklahoma defeats TCU, it’s all but in. If TCU wins, things get interesting. The Horned Frogs could have a case, but would likely get bumped.

• If 12-0 Wisconsin beats OSU, it’s likely in, but if OSU wins, and Oklahoma beats TCU, it’s likely between the Buckeyes and Crimson Tide.

In that case, the nod most likely goes to Alabama, even with a schedule that wasn’t challenging. Before their loss to Auburn, the Tide’s strength of schedule was No. 63. Their best wins are against Mississippi State and LSU.

OSU would have an advantage in the best-wins category with Ws against Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan State.

If it does come down to Ohio State and Alabama, the deciding factor might be each team’s losses, and the 31-point beatdown the Buckeyes endured at Iowa might be what keeps them out of the playoffs. Stanford vs. USC, 8 (ESPN)

The 10-2 Trojans had the week off, while 9-3 Stanford had a tough game with Notre Dame, plus RB Bryce Love is nursing a sore ankle. This is a rematch of a regular-season game, won by USC. The Trojans make it two straight, 31-24.

Memphis UCF, noon (WEWS)

A spot in the Peach Bowl is on the line in what could be a shootout. This a rematch of a regular-season game won by the Knights, 40-13. UCF has scored at least 40 points in nine games, including two games of at least 60 and one 70-point game, but the Tigers are 10-1. Coach Scott Frost is rumored for job openings, so that could be a factor in keeping his team focused but the Knights stay undefeated with a 45-31 win. at

Akron vs. Toledo, noon (ESPN)

After years of close misses, the Rockets are back in the MAC championship against the upstart Zips. Toledo quarterback Logan Woodside has thrown for 3,451 yards and 24 TDs, and will help bring home the school’s first conference title since 2005. Rockets win, 38-24. Oklahoma vs. TCU, 12:30 (WJW) The Sooners bring too much offense to

Fresno State vs. Boise State, 7:45 (ESPN)

Fans who can’t get enough of this matchup, your wish has been granted. The Bulldogs beat Boise, 28-17, on Nov. 25, but it’s payback time. Boise wins the rematch at home, 28-17. vs. Miami (WEWS) Clemson (Fla.), 8

Despite its lose to Pittsburgh last week, 10-1 Miami are still in prime position. With a win, the Hurricanes are likely in the playoffs, but the Tigers defense is too tough. Clemson wins, 27-10. Ohio State vs. Wisconsin, 8 (WJW)

Coach Urban Meyer said he won’t know the status of QB J.T. Barrett until mid-week, but even if he plays it’s reasonable to think he won’t be close to 100 percent. That’s a big advantage to the Badgers, who cap a perfect season with defense and a strong running game, 27-21.
