Browns cut underachieving Britt

- By Jeff Schudel

Kenny Britt won’t be dropping any more passes for the Browns.

The Browns elevated defensive back Justin Currie from the practice squad Dec. 8 because Jabrill Peppers is sidelined with a knee injury, so to create a roster spot for Currie, they cut Britt.

Britt, a wide receiver in his ninth season, was a major disappointment as one of former Executive VP of Football Operations Sashi Brown’s major free-agent acquisitions in the 2017 offseason.

He has started four of the nine games he has played. He has 18 catches for 233 yards and two touchdowns. He was targeted 37 times. Britt was benched for the entire game against the Vikings at Coach Hue Jackson’s discretion. He missed two other games with injuries.

The Browns are topheavy at wide receiver, but instead of cutting Sammie Coates, acquired from the Steelers just before training camp for a seventhround

draft pick, or cutting Bryce Treggs, who was signed from the Eagles’ practice squad, they cut Britt on John Dorsey’s first full day as general manager.

Dorsey was hired not long after Sashi Brown was fired.

Britt signed a four-year, $32 million deal with $10.5

guaranteed March 9.

The Browns apparently concluded to eat the remainder of the guaranteed money rather than put up with Britt’s shenanigans any longer.

Among other things, Britt was sent home from Houston for missing bedcheck the night before the Browns played the Texans.

The Browns play rap and other types of music during practice. Britt would often dance to the music instead of devoting his full attention to practice.

Currie, 6-foot-2, 212 pounds, has appeared in one game with the Browns this season. He was signed to the practice squad Dec. 5.
